The Attorney-General

I have been asked to reply.

The records of the Director of Public Prosecutions for Northern Ireland relate to persons remanded on bail or in custody for trial on indictment. Of these during the 12-month period ending 31st October 1978, there were 1,853 applications for bail made to the High Court, of which 676 persons were granted bail and 1,177 persons were refused bail.

Information as to the number of such persons who have been convicted or acquitted or remain untried is not readily available but will be supplied to my hon. Friend as soon as practicable.
