HC Deb 15 November 1978 vol 958 c276W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what deficiencies existed in the supply of secondary teachers in mathematics, physics, business studies, music, speech and drama, religious education and technical subjects in Scotland and Tayside, respectively, as at August 1978.

Mr. McElhone

Estimates of excesses and deficits of teachers by subject derived from the September 1978 school census are not yet available. In September 1977 the number of secondary teachers employed in Scotland and in Tayside was 1,141 and 148 respectively in excess of the recommended standards. At that date the only subjects in which there were net deficits nationally were physics (—20) and technical education (—65). In Tayside there were no net deficits.

Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the output in 1978 of secondary teachers in mathematics, physics, business studies, music, speech and drama, religious education and technical subjects from each of the teacher training colleges and overall; and how many vacancies were left unfilled.

Mr. McElhone

Information about the 1978 output of newly qualified secondary teachers is as follows:
