§ Mr. McElhoneEstimates of excesses and deficits of teachers by subject derived from the September 1978 school census are not yet available. In September 1977 the number of secondary teachers employed in Scotland and in Tayside was 1,141 and 148 respectively in excess of the recommended standards. At that date the only subjects in which there were net deficits nationally were physics (—20) and technical education (—65). In Tayside there were no net deficits.
