Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest figure for the amount of investment per head of population in the National Health Service (a) for the United Kingdom, (b) for the North-West region, (c) for the southern regions, and (d) for the Rochdale area health authority.

Mr. Moyle

Capital and revenue expenditure per head of population in the National Health Service in 1977–78 was as follows:

  1. (a) for the United Kingdom—£120
  2. (b) for the North-Western regional health authority—£116
  3. (c) for the southern regions—£121
  4. (d) for the Rochdale area health authority—£86.

NOTES

1. The southern regions include North-West Thames, North-East Thames, South-East Thames, South-West Thames, Wessex, Oxford and South-Western regional health authorities.

2. The national and southern region figures are affected by the payment of London weighting allowance to some staff and by the incidence of additional expenditure in the provision of facilities for the clinical teaching of medical and dental students, which also applies to the figure for the North-Western regional
