§ Mr. Terry Walkerasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are currently studying in the United Kingdom; whether the rates of course fees charged to them are the same as for United Kingdom student and whether they are in any way subsidised by United Kingdom taxpayers.
§ Mr. OakesIn 1976–77, the last year for which information is available, there were some 1,300 full-time and sandwich students from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man studying in the United Kingdom. For the purpose of tuition fees, students from the Channel Islands or Isle of Man should be charged the same fee as United Kingdom students. To the extent that the tuition fee is less than a full economic fee, Island students are subsidised by United Kingdom public funds. The Island authorities do, however, contribute towards the cost of the provision of teacher training for their students.
