HC Deb 26 May 1978 vol 950 c757W
Dr. Glyn

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many farming units including smallholders are registered in England and Wales.

Mr. Bishop

At the June 1977 census, which is the latest date for which information is available, there were 199,000 holdings in England and Wales.

The figures relate to all known holdings with 40 standard man days—smds—or more per annum. Those with less than 40 smds per annum are included only if they have 4 hectares—10 acres—or more of crops and grass or at least one regular whole-time worker.
