§ Mr. Churchillasked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the United Kingdom's expenditure on defence, expressed as a percentage of gross national product, but excluding education, married accommodation, medical services, service pensions and any other cost borne on the Defence Vote, but which would in the case of a civilian family be provided by any other Department or local authority.
§ Mr. MulleyIn the 1978 Statement on the Defence Estimates, the total defence budget for 1978–79 was estimated to represent about 4¾4 per cent. of gross domestic product at market prices. If expenditure on education, married accommodation, medical services and Service pensions were excluded, it would represent about 4¼ per cent. on the same basis.
