asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) how many people have benefited from the recruitment subsidy for school leavers in the United Kingdom;

(2) how many people in (a) West Gloucestereshire and (b) Gloucestershire benefited from the recruitment subsidy for school leavers since its inception.

During the life of the recruitment subsidy for school leavers from 13th October 1975 to 30th September 1976, 30,179 applications were approved in respect of young people entering employment in Great Britain—the scheme did not apply in Northern Ireland—of whom 36 were in West Gloucestereshire and 273 in Gloucestershire.

During the life of the youth employment subsidy—which succeeded the recruitment subsidy for school leavers—from 1st October 1976 to 31st March 1978, 45,909 applications were approved in Great Britain—the scheme did not apply in Northern Ireland—of whom 68 were in West Gloucestershire and 574 in Gloucestershire.
