Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what was the income and expenditure of the British Council on account of its direct teaching of English operations in each of the countries where these schemes were run in the year 1976–77;

(2) if he will list the countries where the British Council is currently running or planning to run direct teaching of English operations.

Since then, the British Council has opened direct teaching of English operations in Hong Kong, Lebanon and the Netherlands and is planning similar operations in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Singapore, Syria, Venezuela and the Federal Republic of Germany.
