§ Mr. Gwilym Robertsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will remove differences of treatment among police officers by amending the Police Regulations in order to enable men officers as well as women officers to enter the police forces at an height of approximately 5 feet 4 inches.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesNo. Chief officers of police already have discretion to accept suitable candidates who are below the normal minimum height, although the general view in the police service, with which I agree, is that the height of most officers in a police force should be above the average for their sex of the country as a whole.
