HC Deb 09 May 1978 vol 949 cc457-8W
Mr. Clemitson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what was the value of British exports to Vietnam in the latest year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on the prospects for expanding trade with Vietnam and any assistance which the Government are prepared to give to assist such an expansion.

Mr. Meacher

The value of British exports to Vietnam in 1977 was £4,859,000. Although Vietnam's capacity for external trade is still limited opportunities are likely to increase as the country's economy improves. Several firms are in detailed discussions at present and are hopeful of acquiring business.

Although the United Kingdom does not have a capital aid programme, we have offered aid from the Aid/Trade Contingency Fund to support a ships deal for Austin and Pickersgill. I refer my hon. Friend to the answers given by my right hon. Friend the Minister for Overseas Development to the hon. Member for Surrey, North-West (Mr. Grylls) on 9th February 1978—[Vol. 943, c. 645.]—and on 16th February 1978.—[Vol. 944, c. 342–3.]

The full services of the Department of Trade and the British Embassy in Hanoi are available to advise and assist British exporters.
