Miss Maynard

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary since 1960 have been convicted of offences, and, of these, how many were offences which involved violence, namely, assault.

Mr. Mason

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 25th April 1978; Vol. 948, c. 544], gave the following information:

Statistics prior to 1973 are not available. Between 1st January 1973 and 31st December 1977, some 150 members of the RUC were convicted, mainly in respect of motoring offences. Available records indicate that there were 14 convictions in respect of offences against the person.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons were convicted of terrorist offences who are either at the time of their arrest serving members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary or Ulster Defence

the RUC has taken the leading role in the partnership. Throughout the period the RUC has remained responsible under the law for the maintenance of law and order.
