asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the number of working families with dependent children who are still below the tax threshold and are therefore able to make the maximum gain from the switch to child benefits.

The available information on the number of working families below the tax threshold has to be derived from the family expenditure survey and I regret that the most recent figures which could be obtained relate to 1975, before the introduction of child benefits.
