§ Mr. GoldingThe following table gives the numbers registered as unemployed in each employment office area in Cheshire.
March 1970 March 1974 March 1978 Chester 975 1,278 3,364 Congleton 188 160 385 Crewe 903 742 1,486 Ellesmere Port 656 784 2,343 Macclesfield 586 483 1,418 Middlewich 48 69 161 Nantwich 153 138 312 Neston 143 150 421 Northwich 509 609 1,057 Runcorn 435 839 2,708 Sandbach 79 107 288 Warrington 678 1,164 3,387 Widnes 686 1,095 2,560 Wilmslow 131 298 749 Winsford 304 445 868 Unemployment rates are calculated by expressing the numbers unemployed as percentages of all employees, employed and unemployed. These differ from the working population which also includes self-employed persons and members of Her Majesty's forces but is not available for local areas. The rates can be calculated for the whole of a travel-to-work area but not separately for its constituent parts. The following table gives rates for single employment office areas, where these can be calculated, and otherwise for the relevant travel-to-work areas.
March 1970 March 1974 March 1978 Chester 2.1 2.5 5.6 Congleton 2.2 1.8 4.4 Crewe, Nantwich and Sandbach* 2.6 2.0 3.8 Macclesfield 2.6 1.9 5.1 Northwich, Middlewich and Winsford* 2.6 3.1 5.2 Widnes and Runcorn* 2.5 3.8 9.6 Warrington (which includes Newton-le-Willows)* 1.3 1.9 5.3 * Travel-to-work area. Ellesmere Port and Neston are included in the Liverpool travel-to-work-area and Wilmslow is in the Manchester travel-to-work area; in both cases they account for only a small part of the area and it is not possible to provide a meaningful rate.
§ Mr. Goodladasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many registered jobs were available in each of the employment areas in Cheshire in February 1960, February 1970, February 467W 1973, February 1974 and February 1977; and what percentage the number of jobs at each date represented of the working population of the area.

Notes: 1. The estimates for June 1971(a) and earlier dates are derived mainly from counts of national insurance cards and are not comparable with those for June 1971(b) and later dates which are based on censuses of employment. 2. The figures for June 1976 are the latest at present available for local areas. 3. Comparable figures for 1974 are not available due to difficulties which arose in allocating local authority employees following the reorganisation of local government.
