HC Deb 08 May 1978 vol 949 c400W
Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, further to his Written Answer, Official Report, 24th April, column 467, how many of the 98 detected cases of impersonation were in respect of a 10-year passport and how many in respect of passport or travel documents; and if he will now reconsider his decision on introducing further safeguards.

Mr. Luard

Of the 98 cases of impersonation detected in the past 16 months, 36 related to applications for 10-year passports and 62 to British visitor's passports. My right hon. Friend is still of the opinion that there is insufficient evidence of abuse to warrant the introduction of further safeguards which would deprive millions of genuine applicants of the immediate availability of British visitor's passports over Post Office counters.
