HC Deb 08 May 1978 vol 949 cc398-9W
Dr. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current pupil/teacher ratio at Holyport Church of England Primary School; how this compares with the national average; and if, in view of the expansion of the local population, she will make further funds available to the local authority to meet the increased needs for teachers and new building.

Miss Margaret Jackson

Information about pupil-teacher ratios is supplied by local education authorities on the understanding that details for individual schools will not be published by my Department. For England and Wales in January 1977 the average staffing standard in primary schools, including middle deemed primary, was 23.8 pupils per qualified teacher. Central Government resources for local authority services, including education, are provided through the rate support grant. This grant is not speicifically earmarked for particular needs but is partly determined in relation to the size of the local population.
