HC Deb 04 May 1978 vol 949 cc237-8W
Mr. Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many juveniles were received into community homes in 1973, 1976 and 1977.

Mr. Moyle

I regret that this information is not available. The number of children accommodated in community homes at 31st March in England and Wales in each of the following years was:

1973 31,100
1976 35,200

The figure for 1977 is not yet available.

Mr. Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many places currently exist for juveniles in youth treatment centres; and how many such centres are now in operation.

Mr. Moyle

Two youth treatment centres are now in operation. The St. Charles Centre at Brentwood, Essex opened in July 1971; the Glenthorne Centre at Erdington, Birmingham started to take young people on 28th February 1978.

The centres together provide 87 places for highly disturbed and disruptive young people, not necessarily delinquent, in need of long-term care and treatment in conditions of security.
