asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take steps to ensure that one-parent families with an only or eldest child under five years of age who are dependent on supplementary benefit receive the full benefit of the child benefit rates announced in the Budget.

These families will be entitled to receive the full amount of the new rates of child benefit and child benefit increase together with sufficient supplementary benefit to bring their total income up to their new supplementary benefit level. The aim of supplementary benefit is to make up a family's income to a given level, so the amount of this benefit paid has to reflect changes in other social security benefits such as child benefit
