HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 cc804-5W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport why the advertisements calling upon those taxpayers who were misled by the Swansea Driving and Vehicle Licensing Centre to apply for forms do not contain a free postage form; and whether he will rectify these advertisements and arrange for the repayment of postage costs to those who have replied to his first advertisements.

Mr. Horam

The Government are already dealing with entitlement to repayment on a generous basis. It is not unreasonable that claimants should pay the very small initial postage cost.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will undertake to make an oral statement in the House when he is able to give the total costs of the reimbursements made to those people who were misled by the wrong information when applying for their road fund licences in March 1977; and whether he will ensure such figures include the funds spent by staff, postage, reprinting of forms, publicity and total inclusive costs.

Mr. William Rodgers

I shall give the House these figures when they are available.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether the £44,200 costs for Press advertisements includes the costs of printing the application forms for the repayment of the moneys wrongly obtained by his Department due to a misleading vehicle licence renewal form.

Mr. William Rodgers

No.
