asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the number of rent rebates and rent allowances granted in Great Britain; and how many were estimated to be in respect of families with dependent children in the latest year for which figures are available.

At October 1977, 1,220,000 rent rebates and 230,000 rent allowances were granted in Great Britain, excluding those to supplementary benefit recipients. It is estimated from the 1976 Family Expenditure Survey that 20 per
