HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 cc687-9W
Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of men and women who left the Metropolitan Police Force between 1st January and to date in the current year; and of that number, how many had completed: (a) under five years of service, (b) between five and 10 years of service and (c) over 10 years of service.

Dr. Summerskill

Provisional figures up to 18th March are (a) 175; (b) 25 (c) 198. The figure at (c) includes 158 who retired on pension. Transfers to other police forces are not included in the figures.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent cars, other vehicles, motorcycles, two-way radios, and civilian assistance have helped to offset the shortfall in the number of the uniformed Metropolitan Police, detailed in the Official Report 24th February, c. 821–2.

Dr. Summerskill

Vehicles, technical aids and civilian assistance undoubtedly help the police in their task, but it is difficult to put a precise value on their relationship to the force's manpower deficiency.

Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects to revise the establishment for the Metropolitan Police Force.
