§ Mrs. Wiseasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether any of the women who have been remanded in custody at present, or during the last year, were (a) pregnant at the time of remand, (b) took babies into prison during remand, and (c) had babies under three years who were left outside prison during the custodial remand.

Of those women who were in custody on remand in Prison Department establishments on 16th March 1978, 15 were known to be pregnant and 42 had stated that they were mothers of children under three years old. There were two women who had their babies with them on the same date; there were no others in the preceding 12 months.
