§ Mr. Joseph Deanasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the current level of Government financial support for sport in the United Kingdom; and whether he plans to increase it in the future in order to allow British competitors to compete on more equal terms with other nations.
§ Mr. Denis HowellGovernment grant-in-aid to the Sports Council in the current year is £11.5 million. The Council has already been told that this will be increased for next year. It is, however, for the Sports Council itself to decide how much of its resources should go towards helping British competitors in international events.
