§ Mr. Formanasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much it would cost to restore the real value of the Houghton pay award of 1974 to teachers.
§ Miss Margaret JacksonThe cost of increasing the present salaries of primary and secondary teachers in England and Wales in proportion to the increase in the retail price index since the effective date of the Houghton award would be about £728 million, an increase of nearly 34 per cent. This does not include the extra cost to the employers of increased superannuation and national insurance contributions.
