HL Deb 13 March 1978 vol 389 c1165WA
Lord STRATHSPEY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) whether RAF Station Thorney Island is to be sold for unrestricted civilian flying use:
  2. (b) whether they are aware that the report of such an intended sale is giving rise to increasing anxiety in that locality;
  3. (c) how such a use might effect the local environment, and in particular Chichester Harbour and surrounding villages; and
  4. (d) how they intend to protect such local interests.

Baroness BIRK

The Royal Air Force Station at Thorney Island is surplus to Ministry of Defence requirements and is to be sold.

The Government appreciate that there is local concern about its future use which is initially a matter for decision by the local planning authority. West Sussex County Council have published a comprehensive consultation document to elicit the views of the interests concerned.
