HC Deb 13 March 1978 vol 946 cc61-2W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many operating theatres are in use within the Brent and Harrow area; what is the establishment of theatre-trained nurses assigned to each and the present shortfall; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moyle

The information is as follows:

Mr. Moyle

Disposable syringes have no particular advantage, other than convenience, over re-usable syringes when the patient using them follows good hygienic practice. In those few cases where disposable syringes are essential for a particular patient they can be supplied through hospitals. The additional annual cost in England of making disposable syringes generally available on prescription would be about £6 million.

Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what consideration is being given to helping diabetics to meet the cost of their special diet; and what schemes are being undertaken into the use of a tablet as an alternative to injections by a needle or syringe.

Mr. Moyle

When assessing supplementary benefit an allowance of £2.10p a week is made for the extra cost of a diabetic's special diet.

The majority of diabetics in this country are currently being treated by diet only or by diet and oral medicines. More severe cases may require insulin injection. In any individual case the decision on the appropriate treatment is a matter for the clinical judgment of the doctor concerned.
