HC Deb 13 March 1978 vol 946 cc1-2W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in the light of the entry into Great Britain of Mr. Duke of the Ku Klux Klan, he is satisfied with the effectiveness of immigration controls at ports of entry.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The relevant instructions to the Immigration Service at the time of Mr. Duke's entry were to refer to the Home Office cases of people identified at the ports as members of the Ku Klux Klan. There was nothing to identify Mr. Duke to the immigration officer as a member and he was given leave to enter the United Kingdom.

Whilst the general question of the effectiveness of our immigration controls is kept under regular review, there seems no reason from this incident to doubt then-effectiveness.
