HC Deb 13 March 1978 vol 946 cc73-4W
Mr. Grist

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what level of male unemployment his Department anticipates within: (a) the City of Cardiff and (b) the Cardiff travel-to-work area as a result of the announced closure of the East Moors Steelworks.

Mr. Barry Jones

I have been asked to reply.

It is not possible to estimate with accuracy the level of male unemployment likely to arise in the Cardiff travel-to-work area following the East Moors closure.

Mr. Grist

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he intends to take as regards training, retraining and new employment in the City of Cardiff, in view of the imminent closure of the East Moors Steelworks.

Mr. Barry Jones

I have been asked to reply.

The Manpower Services Commission provides a wide range of training facilities at skillcentres in the Cardiff/Newport area. The Commission is in close contact with the British Steel Corporation and employee representatives at the East Moors works and the Corporation has agreed in principle to the use by the Training Services Agency of training facilities in the East Moors Apprentices Training School. A jobcentre was established in the works last November and the full range of Employment Service Agency counselling services are available to all employees.

The Welsh Office, the agencies and the local authorities concerned will continue to make every effort to attact new employment into the area.

Mr. Grist

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give the figures in percentage terms for jobs in the manufacturing sector in: (a) the City of Cardiff and (b) the Cardiff travel-to-work area, as estimated both before and after the closure of the East Moors Steelworks.

Mr. Barry Jones

I have been asked to reply.

The information is not available in the form requested.

Mid-year estimates of employees in employment for 1976 indicated that some 20 per cent. of employees in the employment in the Cardiff employment office area were in the manufacturing sector; the figure for the Cardiff travel-to-work area was 21.9 per cent. At that time the British Steel Corporation East Moors work force represented 13 per cent. of the manufacturing sector in the Cardiff employment office area and 9.3 per cent. in the Cardiff travel-to-work area.
