asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the number of indictable offences recorded by the police and the number cleared up in England and Wales in 1977; and how these figures compare with those for 1975 and 1976.

The number of indictable offences recorded by the police in England and Wales in 1977 (including those of criminal damage of value £20 and under), was 2,636,500.

The available figures for the number of offences cleared up and figures for previous years exclude offences of criminal damage where the reported value was £20 and under. The information available is given in the following table:
