asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has for increasing the provision of hostel accommodation for use by the Probation and After-care Service.

Mr. John

Encouragement is being given to voluntary organisations and housing associations through the Home Office grant scheme to increase after-care hostel places for ex-offenders from the current number of 2,250 by some 130 places in 1978–79.

Two more probation hostels, 13 bail hostels and eight combined probation and bail hostels are in preparation or are planned.
