1,123 patients in the United Kingdom were on the waiting list for a kidney transplant on 31st January 1978.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many kidney transplants have taken place in each of the past five years.

The following are the numbers of kidney transplants using cadaver kidneys recorded in the United Kingdom:

Year ending 30th June
1973 449
1974 476
1975 599
1976 580
1977 671

In addition in the year ending 30th June 1977, 117 live donor transplants were recorded in the United Kingdom. This was the first year that records of the numbers of such transplants have been collected.
