HC Deb 02 March 1978 vol 945 cc384-5W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will move to set up a permanent Select Committee to examine the wages and conditions of physically and mentally disturbed people who work in adult training centres;

(2) if he will institute an inquiry into the wages and condtions of physically and mentally disabled people who work in adult training centres.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The setting up of Select Committees is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Lord President of the Council, who will be writing to my hon. Friend.

I understand that my hon. Friend's Questions are prompted by Granada Television recent "World In Action" programme on the pay and condtions of handicapped and elderly people in local authority day care centres. I saw the programme and have arranged for my Department to proceed with inquiries into the specific allegations made in the programme. I am grateful to Granada Television for having provided me with both a transcript and the main research material on which the programme was based. I shall be making a further statement as soon as possible.
