HC Deb 29 June 1978 vol 952 cc660-1W
Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the total cost of running the General Practice Finance Corporation, including all main constituent costs of any sort, such as expenditure on its own programmes, wages, rent, heating and lighting and maintenance in the latest 12 months for which figures are available; and what are the projected costs for 1978–79.

Mr. Moyle

The General Practice Finance Corporation is an independent statutory body set up under the National Health Service Act 1966. The Act requires the corporation to submit to the Secretaries of State for Social Services and for Scotland an annual report, including audited accounts, that is laid before Parliament. The annual report to 31st March 1977 is House of Commons Paper (492) 1977–78 Session. Expenditure on the health Vote is restricted to the fees payable to, and reimbursement of expenses of, members of the corporation; these amounted to £5,700 in 1976–77 and are estimated to be £8,000 for 1978–79.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what has been the total cost of running the Medicines Commission, including all main constituent costs of any sort, such as expenditure on its own programmes, wages, rent, heating and lighting and maintenance in the latest 12 months for which figures are available; and what are the projected costs for 1978–79;

(2) what has been the total cost of running the Committee on the Review of Medicines, including all main constituent costs of any sort, such as expenditure on its own programmes, wages, rent, heating and lighting and maintenance in the latest 12 months for which figures are available; and what are the projected costs for 1978–79;

(3) what has been the total cost of running the Committee on Safety of Medicines, including all main constituent costs of any sort whatsoever, such as expenditure on its own programmes, wages, rent, heating and lighting and maintenance in the latest 12 months for which figures are available; and what are the projected costs for 1978-79;

(4) what has been the total cost of running the British Pharmacopoeia, including all main constituent costs of any sort, such as expenditure on its own programmes, wages, rent, heating and light-

1977-78 1978-79
Medicines Commission 15,000 20,000

Committee on Safety of Medicines 60,000 68,000

The total actual cost for 1977-78 was £82,000: a breakdown of this figure between the above bodies is not readily available.

These figures do not include expenditure on departmental salaries, accommodation and other common services which would be incurred by the Department in any event in discharge of its statutory duties under the Medicines Act.
