HC Deb 29 June 1978 vol 952 cc623-4W
25. Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the total debts and liabilities which have been incurred by Her Majesty's Government since 1st March 1974; what percentage has been repaid to date; and by what date he expects to repay the whole.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

In the period from 1st April 1974 to 31st March 1978, Her Majesty's Government borrowed £474 billion of which 89 per cent. was repaid during the period. Much of the remainder represented the refinancing of debt incurred earlier which matured during the period. The latest maturing date of stocks issued in the period is 1999.
