§ 44. Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the discussions he has had with the Singer Company on job prospects.
§ Mr. MillanMy right hon. Friend the Minister of State and I met the chairman and senior executives of the company last Wednesday to discuss the outcome of its worldwide sourcing study and the implications for its Clydebank plant. The loss of jobs is a matter for grave concern. The company has indicated that it is prepared to consider any alternative proposals put to it and the trade unions will be examining this. I shall be keeping in touch with developments. Meanwhile, I have asked my officials and the Scottish Development Agency to consider ways of alleviating the effects of any rundown which may occur.
