HL Deb 22 June 1978 vol 393 cc1527-8WA
Lord BROCKWAY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the progress made in implementing certain of the recommendations in the Shackleton Report on the Falkland Islands.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

I reviewed our action to implement the Shackleton Report in my answer to Questions on 25th January. Since then we have made further progress. We are financing the construction of an all-weather road from Darwin to Stanley and of a new school hostel in Stanley. We are also strengthening the Public Works Department, an essential contribution to these projects. We are carrying forward our urgent discussions with the Falkland Islands Government on expanding the internal air service. A Salaries Commissioner and other experts have visited the Falklands. We are recruiting a Fiscal Adviser and a Development Officer.
