HC Deb 07 June 1978 vol 951 cc190-1W
Mr. Neubert

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the annualised rate of inflation for the preceding three months in each of the months since February 1974.

Mr. Joel Barnett

The annualised rates of increase in the retail price index for the preceding three months for each month from February 1974 to April 1978 were as follows:

prices together with a revaluation of the total of public spending for 1977–78 projected in Command Paper No. 5519.

Mr. Joel Barnett

The information asked for is shown in the table below.

The repricing of the Cmnd. 5519 projections makes use of information about price movements provided by Departments for successive surveys. The information provided for a given survey applies to the expenditure plans set out in the preceding White Paper. It is not strictly applicable to earlier expenditure plans. However, the figures shown in the table provide a reasonable indication of the Cmnd. 5519 projections at 1977 survey prices.

Because of classification changes, the figures in the table are not comparable with the figures shown in Cmnd. 7049. The programmes particularly affected are indicated by asterisks. Details of the classification changes are given in the public expenditure White Papers.
