asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of the employed population are in the public service, including the National Health Service, local authorities and nationalised industries.

In June 1976, the latest year for which information is available, 29.5 per cent. of the United Kingdom employed labour force were in the public service.

Notes:—1. Public service employment is made up of employment in:

  1. (i) Central Government, which comprises all Government Departments (including Northern Ireland Departments), together with Her Majesty's Forces and other organisations such as the National Health Service, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and the Manpower Services Commission.
  2. (ii) Local authorities, which comprise all local government authorities which have power to raise funds by means of rates or levies.

  4. (iii) Public corporations, which comprise the nationalised industries (including the Post Office) and other public trading bodies such as the Bank of England, the British Broadcasting Corporation, the Civil Aviation Authority and regional water authorities.

2. The employed labour force comprises employees in employment, self-employed people (with or without employees) and Her Majesty's Forces.
