Mr. Hicks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will state for the most recent year for which figures are available the level of average weekly earnings for males and females, respectively, in work in the United Kingdom and the corresponding figure for Scotland, Wales and each of the standard regions in England and for Cornwall; and if he will also express these figures as a percentage of the United Kingdom figure.

The following combined results of the new earnings surveys in Great Britain and Northern Ireland relate to April 1977 and to men aged 21 and over and women aged 18 and over, in full-time employment in the specified regions, whose earnings for the survey reference pay periods were not affected by absence. They are not necessarily representative of the position over a full year. The estimates relate to their gross
