Mr. George Gardiner

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if, from international sources available to him, he will list (a) total crude steel output and (b) employees employed in the steel industry, measured on a comparable basis, between 1970 and 1977 in the following countries; the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Japan, France, Canada, Italy and West Germany.

The information on crude steel production is given in table 1. Employment figures are available on the same definitional basis only in respect of countries in the European Economic Communities. The figures which are given in table 2 do however reflect differences in the structure and organisation of the steel industry in the various countries. It would be misleading therefore to use the figures to make direct comparisons between countries. Employment figures for the USA, Canada and Japan are available but are not comparable with
