HC Deb 31 July 1978 vol 955 c76W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the social wage per head of the United Kingdom working population in 1977–78; what forecasts have been made for its value in real terms in 1978–79 and 1979–80; and what is the current estimated public spending per head on separate items included in the social wage calculation.

Mr. Joel Barnett

I regret that comprehensive information on public expenditure in 1977–78 is not yet available. However, the table below gives figures of the social wage and its main components in 1977–78, 1978–79 and 1979–80, at constant 1977 survey prices based on the estimates in the public expenditure White Paper, Cmnd. 7049.

petrol-driven Vehicles would eventually lead to a reduction in the number of posts that would otherwise be required, of about 800 in Swansea and 1,400 in local offices scattered throughout the country. The number of staff at present working on the driver and vehicle licensing system is about 7,600.
