Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how much money has been devoted to the building of new railway lines in each of the past five years.

Most expenditure on new railway lines in the years in question has been on urban rapid transit schemes, namely: the Mersey loop and link; Clyderail; the Tyne and Wear metro; the Jubilee line; and the Heathrow extension to the Piccadilly line.

Expenditure on these lines, including tunnelling, station construction and upgrading of existing track, together with other British Rail expenditure on new or reinstated lines totalled:

£ million
1973 22.4
1974 28.3
1975 33.7
1976 51.3
1977 57.4
