HC Deb 31 July 1978 vol 955 cc122-3W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many prescriptions have been dispensed by chemists contracted under the National Health Service in the area covered by the Macclesfield parliamentary constituency in each of the past three years.

Mr. Moyle

Information relating solely to the Macclesfield parliamentary constituency is not readily available. However, the number of prescriptions dispensed by chemist—including appliance—contractors under the National Health Service in the Cheshire family practitioner committee area—in which the Macclesfield constituency is included—was as follows:

Calendar year Prescriptions (millions)
1975 5.538
1976 5.788
1977 5.829

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the value of all drugs prescribed under the National Health Service in the area covered by the Macclesfield parliamentary constituency in 1970, 1971, 1974 and 1977 at constant prices and in 1970 money terms, respectively.

Mr. Moyle

Information relating to the value of drugs prescribed under the National Health Service in the Macclesfield parliamentary constituency is not available; nor is it practicable to make any form of constant price calculation in respect of the supply of drugs in a local area. However, the value of drugs, preparations and appliances dispensed by chemist (including appliance) contractors under the National Health Service in the former Cheshire executive council area and, from April 1974, in the Cheshire family practitioner committee area—in both of which the Macclesfield constituency is situated—was as follows:

Calendar Value
Year £ millions
Cheshire Executive Council Area. 1970 3.372
1971 3.515
1974 0.813
(to 31st March)
Cheshire Family Practitioner Committee Area. 1974 3.479
(from 1st April)
1977 8.752
