Mr. MacGregor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will confirm that the introduction of a reduced rate income tax band in his Budget has necessitated an increase from 36 pages to over 400 pages in the standard PAYE tax tables; and what is the total cost of producing and circulating to employers these tax tables in the current fiscal year and in 1977–78.

Mr. Robert Sheldon,

pursuant to his previous reply, gave the following answer:

Yes. The estimated cost of producing and issuing tax tables to employers in the current year is about £4¼ million. The cost for 1977–78 was about £435,000.
