HC Deb 31 July 1978 vol 955 c179W
Mr. George Gardiner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate his Department has made of the cost of (a) rail fares, (b) bus fares, (c) running a 1,000 to 1,500 c.c. motor car, using index numbers based on 1945=100, at the following dates: July 1945, October 1957, October 1964, June 1970, February 1974, and the latest available date.

Mr. William Rodgers

Figures for 1945 are not available for rail or bus and the index numbers are accordingly based on June 1947=100. Rail and bus figures are from Department of Employment's general index of retail prices; the motoring—standing and running—costs, published—annually only—by the Automobile Association, are based on 10,000 miles per annum. The calculations involve a substantial degree of approximation and interpretation of the data should take this into account.
