§ Mr. George Gardinerasked the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate his Department has made of the cost of (a) rail fares, (b) bus fares, (c) running a 1,000 to 1,500 c.c. motor car, using index numbers based on 1945=100, at the following dates: July 1945, October 1957, October 1964, June 1970, February 1974, and the latest available date.
§ Mr. William RodgersFigures for 1945 are not available for rail or bus and the index numbers are accordingly based on June 1947=100. Rail and bus figures are from Department of Employment's general index of retail prices; the motoring—standing and running—costs, published—annually only—by the Automobile Association, are based on 10,000 miles per annum. The calculations involve a substantial degree of approximation and interpretation of the data should take this into account.
