HC Deb 31 July 1978 vol 955 cc94-5W
Mr. George Gardiner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will state the current number of people removed from the United Kingdom unemployment figures as a result of the operation of the Government's various job creation programmes.

Mr. Golding

The full programme of special employment measures is currently supporting over 300,000 people and is estimated to be reducing the unemployed register in Great Britain by over 200,000. Within this programme the special temporary employment programme, the job creation programme and the small firms employment subsidy, all of which support extra jobs, are estimated to be reducing unemployment by about 50,000.

The position in Northern Ireland is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
