HC Deb 31 July 1978 vol 955 cc86-7W
Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proportion of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony annual budget was financed out of the proceeds from the sale of Ocean Island phosphates from 1920 to 1975; and what proportion of the Gilberts Islands colony annual budget was financed out of the proceeds from the sale of Ocean Island phosphate from 1975 to 1978.

Mr. Luard

In the time available it has not been possible to collect figures for the past 58 years. Figures for 1978 are not yet available, but the revenues from phosphate in 1975–1977 were used to finance about 40 per cent. of the budget.

Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony was allocated in development aid and grants in aid from 1947 to 1975; and what the Gilbert Islands Colony has been allocated in development aid and grants in aid since 1975.

Mr. Luard

Total development aid disbursements to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony from 1947–75 were £11.42 million. Since the separation of Tuvalu disbursements to the Gilbert Islands total £6.87 million. No grants-in-aid are known to have been made.

Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what the Ellice Islands, now Tuvalu, have been allocated in development aid and grants in aid since 1975.

Mr. Luard

Total disbursements of capital aid for the United Kingdom financial years 1975–76 to 1977–78 were £2.26 million. Grant-in-aid for the same period was £0.94 million and the United Kingdom has also provided technical co-operation funds totalling £0.15 million.
