Mr. George Gardiner

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the total foreign currency borrowing of Her Majesty's Government at the following dates, expressed in £ sterling (a) July 1945, (b) October 1951, (c) October 1964, (d) June 1970, (e) February 1974 and (f) at the latest available date.

The following figures show the total foreign currency borrowing of central Government outstanding at the nearest dates for which figures are readily available. The figures comprise long-term borrowing from overseas governments and the Deutsche Bundesbank; borrowing from the IMF—other than within the gold tranche—and other overseas monetary authorities; borrowing under euro-dollar facilities and the sale of British Government foreign currency bonds.
