HC Deb 31 July 1978 vol 955 cc154-5W
Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total overseas earnings in 1977 of British consulting engineers, architects and surveyors remitted to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Armstrong

Present indications are that the overseas earnings in 1977 of these professions amounted to about £350 million. The United Kingdom share of the profits of overseas based consultancies is included in this figure. A final estimate will appear in "United Kingdom Balance of Payments 1967–77" (Pink Book) due to be published early September. It is not known how much of these earnings were remitted to the United Kingdom, some being retained abroad for reasons such as the funding of future operations.
