Mr. Michael Morris

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many conservation areas there are in England and Wales at the latest available estimate; and how many of them have been accepted as outstanding and attract grant under the Town and Country Planning (Amended) Act 1972.

On 21st July 1978, the Department had been notified of the designation of 4,440 conservation areas in England. 481 of these have been accepted as outstanding for the purposes of section 10 of the Town and Country Planning (Amendment) Act 1972.
