HC Deb 27 July 1978 vol 954 c880W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how much money has been devoted to the maintenance and repair of railway track in each of the past five years.

Mr. William Rodgers

The figures published in the British Railways Board's annual reports and accounts for track maintenance are as follows:

£ million
1973 82.3
1974 101.1
1975 178.0
1976 189.1
1977 243.6

In 1974 new accounting arrangements were introduced whereby all work on track was charged to revenue account except for major electrification schemes and major addidtions to routes.
